Missionary Biographies To The Golden Shore

I was still a pastor in South Carolina but was praying hard about missions. I had contacted Pastor Austin Gardner of the Vision Baptist Church and Mission in Alpharetta Georgia and he recommended that I read Adoniram Judson’s biography “To the Golden Shore.” So that week after work I swung by Bob Jones University library to check out the book.

The book was first published in 1956 and to be honest it is a monumental read of 530 pages. Don’t, however, let the size of this book put you off. It is well worth the investment to read. The story of Adoniram’s life, his conversion, his education, and finally his missionary ministry is so captivating that reading this book will not feel like a drudgery.

Adoniram was a missionary to Burma, and he lived from 1788 to 1850. His story is a story of legend. He suffered hunger, disease, imprisonment, and the loss of loved ones. Through his efforts of training men for the ministry and starting churches there are now over 2 million Baptist believers in what is now called Mynamar. Every pastor should read this book: In this book you will find countless illustrations for sermons and lessons. Also the story of Adoniram will inspire your people to pray for and give to missions. Dear Pastor, if you haven’t yet read this book I heartily recommend it. Every young person considering missions should read this book. I’ll add that every Christian young person should read this book, because every Christian should seriously consider giving their lives to world missions. This is a biography about one of the greatest missionaries who ever lived. It is the story of a man who suffered unimaginable loss for the glory of God and the Kingdom of heaven. Young person let me say that God is worthy of your life, follow the example of Judson in laying your life down for God’s glory.
