Latin America’s Leftist Resurgence
Latin America is currently seeing a leftist resurgence. In the last 5 years, several socialists have been elected to the highest office in their respective countries: Chile’s Gabriel Boric, Honduras’ Xiomara Castro, Peru’s Pedro Castillo, Argentina’s Alberto Fernandez, and Mexico’s Lopez Obrador. This shift to the left will only increase in 2022, with Brazil & Colombia’s upcoming presidential elections already being led in preliminary polls by left-wing candidates.
While this new crop of socialist leaders seems to come across as more measured than those of the past, time will better tell how they will respond. Each president faces significant challenges in their pledge to fight inequality, corruption, and tradition and push for more domestic, political, and social change. Pray with us for these leaders in Latin America. And pray that amid so much change and mounting hope in men, we can keep declaring the true gospel of Jesus.
