Peru’s Divisive Run-Off
Coups, political instability, widespread gang violence. Haiti’s already dire situation has only been exacerbated by the murder of President Jovenel Moïse last week in his home in Port-au-Prince.
Haitian police say 28 foreign hitmen were involved, mostly Colombians and a few Haitian-Americans. Angry civilians joined the police in search for the gunmen, and most have been caught, but eight are still at large. Haiti remains in a state of emergency.
Mr Moïse had led Haiti, one of the poorest nations in the world, since 2017 but had faced corruption allegations and widespread protests demanding his resignation. Haitian presidents serve a 5-year term, and Mr. Moïse’s should’ve ended on February 7, 2021. However, since there was a year delay to elections after the previous president stepped down, Mr. Moïse insisted he had one more year to serve as he did not take office until February 7, 2017.
As Haiti waits for its next president, pray. People are afraid for the future and restless for change. Yet no earthly leader can give them the peace and reassurance they seek. Missionaries and churches are needed throughout Haiti to minister to those who are fearful, hurting, and seeking. Please pray that Christians would reach Haiti with the gospel of Jesus Christ.
