Today, fireworks will light the sky as the people of Argentina celebrate 207 years as an independent nation. Argentina celebrates “Dia de la Independencia” in honor of signing their Declaration of Independence from Spain on July 9, 1816.  Because of this Argentina has named the widest street in the world “Avenida 9 de Julio” (Avenue July 9th) , located in the capital, Buenos Aires.

Argentines will celebrate with day-long celebrations surrounded by family and friends. The day will be filled with parades, speeches, and family gatherings. The weather is cool, making it a perfect time to enjoy locro; a traditional stew, and mate; a hot tea that is shared amongst the people. The feasting doesn’t end there, however. Argentines enjoy pastelitos; fried pastries filled with custard or jellies; empanadas, churros, and often finish the day with hot chocolate. The flag will fly high and the national anthem will be heard, “Freedom, Freedom, Freedom!”

Although Argentina will celebrate freedom as a nation today, the majority of its people still live in bondage. Not in bondage to another country, but in bondage to sin. They do not know the truth of God’s Word. The Bible says in John 8:36 , “If the Son therefore shall make you free, ye shall be free indeed.”  It is only through believing on Jesus Christ that the people of Argentina can obtain true freedom. With a population of over forty-eight million people, Argentina has a great need for more missionaries. Would you please pray for more missionaries to Argentina?
