Many believe this outbreak has resulted from mass gatherings for government elections in November, Christmas and New Years’ holidays, and the recent Carnival parties in February. According to the Washington Post, government and health officials are becoming increasingly concerned with the cases and deaths that rise each day in Brazil. They plead with people to stay home and take all the precautions necessary to avoid getting infected and overrunning the hospitals. Såo Paulo, the wealthiest city in the Southern Hemisphere, does not even have the capacity in their hospitals for all the COVID cases flooding in from other cities and rural towns.
At one time, Brazil had had one of the best vaccination programs globally, and it is within its power to vaccinate millions of people who live within its cities each day. The people are desperate for hope, for help in combatting this deadly virus. But the vaccination campaign for COVID-19 has been delayed many times, and Brazilians cannot receive it as fast as they’d like.
While a vaccine may or may not be the answer to COVID-19, we know we have the answer to Brazil’s spiritual need. The people of Brazil are ripe for the harvest. They hear of sickness and death daily and are desperate for real, living hope. As Christians, it is within our power to help them know the Great Physician, who can heal their sin-sick souls. Will we delay in reaching them with the Gospel?
Then they cried to the Lord in their trouble, and he delivered them from their distress. He sent out his word and healed them and delivered them from their destruction. Psalm 107:19-20
In a grim record, Brazil reported over 2,280 deaths from the coronavirus in just one day. Each of those people had to face an eternal destiny, either with or without God. How many of them have heard that Christ has made a payment for their sins? Will you go to Brazil and tell them?
