Teaching Others To Disciple

When we think about the word discipleship, it’s easy to stop with wining them for Christ, baptizing them and making sure that they are in church. We have been given the great commission and we need to understand what the great commission is.

“Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost:
20 Teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you: and, lo, I am with you always, even unto the end of the world. Amen.”

Matthew 28:19-20

Teaching them to observe all things means that we must have discipleship as our most important ministry.
We must realize that our responsibility is to teach others how to do what we are doing. Or, live like we are living.

“For yourselves know how ye ought to follow us: for we behaved not ourselves disorderly among you;”
2 Thessalonians 3:7

“And ye became followers of us, and of the Lord, having received the word in much affliction, with joy of the Holy Ghost.”
1 Thessalonians 1:6

I would like to see 3 things with you.

1. Teaching others to disciple is allowing them to spend time with you.

Let them see how you do it. Things are better caught than taught. They will do what they see you do.

a. Let them see how you make decisions.
b. Let them see you struggle with things.
c. Let them ask questions.

2. Let them disciple others with you.

a. Let them try and teach others when you are around so that you can teach them what they did right and wrong.
b. Explain why you do what you do and why you say what you say.

c. Let them mess up when around you so that you can help them.

3. Let them disciple without you.

a. Let them try to disciple someone on their own. They need to have the opportunity to experience this and yet at the same time we should be available and ready to help answer their questions.

Jesus sent his disciples out and allowed them to experience the ministry while still with Him.

“After these things the Lord appointed other seventy also, and sent them two and two before his face into every city and place, whither he himself would come.”Luke 10:1

“And the seventy returned again with joy, saying, Lord, even the devils are subject unto us through thy name.” Luke 10:17

We have the opportunity to show them how to do the ministry. We also have the opportunity to do the ministry with them. But our goal is for them to go forward and see God use their life discipling others also.

“And the things that thou hast heard of me among many witnesses, the same commit thou to faithful men, who shall be able to teach others also.” 2 Timothy 2:2
