Ecuador
The country of Ecuador is located in the northwest part of South America. It has a population of 16 million people. The country of Ecuador’s main religion is Catholicism. There is a desperate need for the Gospel of Christ and for churches in the country. Here are the three top religious groups in Ecuador:
Catholics
The first and main religion I would like to look at is Catholicism. Ecuador is 80% Catholic. Only 30 years ago, approximately 95% of Ecuador was at least nominally Catholic. Although Catholicism has lost some of its power and sway recently, it is still the main religion and has a majority of the population of Ecuador as its followers.
Evangelicals
The second largest religion in Ecuador is Evangelicalism. They make up 11% of the population. The term evangelical is a very broad term that encompasses most Protestant denominations. However, in South America, if you say that you are evangelical it usually means you are Pentecostal. Although I am glad that Pentecostals are closer to the Gospel than Catholics, there are still many things they believe which are not Biblical. For example, many Pentecostals place a higher value on their feelings and experiences than on the Bible. They are more likely to trust a dream or some feeling they had than the Word of God. They need to hear the truth from the Bible because that is the only thing that will change their lives.
Atheists
Atheists make up 7.9% of the population of Ecuador. Catholicism was brought over to the people of Ecuador from Spain when they took over the country. They forced the people to convert, and, until the early 1900s, it was the sole religion. However, in recent years, Evangelicals have made inroads with more and more people falling away from the Catholic church. What we also see is that, along with people turning to Pentecostalism and Evangelical groups, some also turned to atheism. They became disillusioned with Catholicism and began to deny the existence of God. They started looking to science for their answers, and not to God. So, not only are there people that need to hear the truth about the Bible and God, there are people that need to accept that there is a God and that the Bible is true.
The people in Ecuador are lost. They do not know Jesus as their savior. They are looking to their religion to save them and it never can. The Bible says in Isaiah 53:6, “All we like sheep have gone astray; We have turned every one to his own way; And the Lord hath laid on him the iniquity of us all.” This verse very clearly shows us that everybody has messed up and sinned against God. Everybody has sought out their own way. The people in Ecuador that do not know Christ are not going to get to Him some other way. They are like wandering sheep without a shepherd. They are not going to to get to God on their own.
The people of Ecuador are dying. I am not trying to be depressing here, but I am trying to be truthful. Put it any way you want, but people are dying all over the world and there is nothing we can do about it. Ecuador is no different and there are people dying every day. Statistics show that 85,000 people die yearly in Ecuador. This means that there are 235 people that died today, and 9 people die every hour. Every hour the clock is ticking and people are dying. There is nothing that
we can do about that, but there is something that we can do about their destination. We can make a difference in that way.
The Bible says that they are condemned already. We all know the verse John 3:16, but what we may not know is John 3:18. The Bible tells us in John 3:16 that God loved us so much that He sent His only son to die for the world and anybody that believes on Jesus will be saved. This is an encouraging and true verse! I am so grateful for a God who loves the world and wants them to be saved. However, in John 3:18, the Bible is clear about what happens to those who have not trusted in Jesus. God loves everyone and wants them to be saved because those who are not saved are condemned already. “He that believeth on him is not condemned: but he that believeth not is condemned already, because he hath not believed in the name of the only begotten Son of God,” John 3:18. The Bible makes it clear that if people have not put their faith in Jesus then they are condemned.
Please pray that God would raise up more laborers for the country of Ecuador! They need to hear. What could you do to help get the Gospel to Ecuador?
